Beach Volleyball
With over 150 countries participating worldwide, beach volleyball is one of the fastest growing Olympic sports since its debut in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
The deep sand base provides a surface with little grip, but a soft landing, enabling a physically demanding game and diving to reach and make shots without risk of serious injury. As well as beach volleyball, a sanded sports area can be used for a number of other sports including beach soccer and beach rugby.
A foundation / drainage layer, nominally 150mm minimum compacted depth, is supplied and spread onto the prepared formation to provide a stable base and assist with drainage. A geotextile membrane is laid to prevent sand from migrating into the foundation stone. The construction is completed with a minimum 400mm depth of clean, suitably graded sports sand.
The facility we built at the National Sports Centre was used by Brazil for their pre 2012 Olympic training and is now regularly used by members the GB team.
Covering the courts when they are not in use (especially during periods of bad weather) helps to deter animals whilst keeping much of the debris off of the sand.
Beach volleyball courts can be constructed as a new build or converting a tennis court (which provides for two recreational courts or one International court.
