Netball

Ideally courts should be built as a dedicated netball playing area, but are often combined with tennis and some other sports. The space required for each netball court is a play lined area 30.5m x 15.25m, with 3.05m side and end run-offs using the same surface. So for a single dedicated netball court with the recommended run-offs, the area required will be 36.6m x 21.35m. For renovation schemes or in places where space is too limited to accommodate the full dimensions, run offs of 2 m may be acceptable where the facility will be used for school and community use, but check latest guidance from England Netball. Otherwise the play lined area should be reduced rather than the run-off margins.

In addition to the playing and run-off area, space will be required for team benches and, for multiple courts, extra space is required between adjoining courts.

The playing surface for outdoor courts needs to be porous and have good grip, with a slip resistance higher than for most other sports. The minimum slip resistance for netball is 75 (AENA ITF CS/02/01) compared with 60 for tennis.

There are also performance requirements for ball rebound, vertical deformation, traction, permeability and surface regularity. For higher levels of play some resilience is also required (between 10% and 30%).

The goals can either be free standing with triangular bases, or socketed. The sockets have captive hinged lids so that the socket can be covered when the goal post is not in place. The uprights are either 50mm diameter for general use, 80mm diameter for international play, with foam protectors recommended for player safety. The goal ring is usually mounted at a height of 3.05m, but some goals have alternative fixing heights for younger players at 2.44m and 2.74m. The regulation size for the metal section used for the goal ring is 16mm diameter, but non regulation 10mm is also available. Nets are fitted to the bottom of the ring to help show when the ball passes through the ring.

Triangular bases avoid the need for sockets, but are less stable and can damage the playing surface when moved or knocked. Particular care is needed when the goals are removed on multi play areas, when they should be placed off the court ideally in an equipment storage area. A spare socket outside the court gate is a good way to store socketed netball goals when they are not in use.
