Small sided football is the collective term for football played with fewer players then the full game - five-a-side and seven-a-side being the most popular types. These variations on soccer may be played with or without barriers at the perimeter of the playing area, with up to seven players on each team.

Playing surface options
The FA suggests: “...if not on natural grass, a smooth, flat, non abrasive surface”
- Macadam (not ideal)
- Acrylic (ideally with cushioning)
- Artificial grass (ideally LSR on shockpad or 3rd generation)
- Carpet (on shockpad)
- Polymeric
There are also specialist indoor floors.
